Denver International Airport Becomes the
First Airport to Deploy High Speed 802.11n Wireless Network
Using the Meru Networks 802.11n solution, the airport provides
secure access to multiple airlines, concessionaires, employees
and millions of passengers
SUNNYVALE, Calif., December 10, 2007— Meru Networks, the
leader in workplace mobility infrastructure, today announced
that Denver International Airport (DIA) has deployed Meru
Network’s 802.11n wireless local-area network (WLAN) system for
pervasive wireless coverage throughout its highly trafficked,
1.5 million square-feet facilities.
DIA has replaced its legacy wireless access points (APs) with
IEEE 802.11n draft 2.0 Wi-Fi Alliance-Certified WLAN
infrastructure from Meru Networks. In addition to providing free
wireless network access to the more than 40 million passengers
that use the airport annually, DIA will also serve as the
managed wireless services provider to the 30 airlines and
hundreds of concessionaires and stores at the airport. As the
fifth busiest airport in the United States, it was critical that
DIA deploy a solution that would provide the capacity and
security required to handle the unpredictable network demands of
passengers while also providing the quality of service (QoS)
expected by the stores and airlines.
“802.11n technology is ready for deployment, and enterprises are
beginning to realize the benefits of the many advanced
capabilities that are inherent in 802.11n,” said Craig Mathias,
principal at Farpoint Group, a wireless and mobile advisory firm
in Ashland, MA. “DIA is a perfect example of how even the
largest enterprises can now offer high-performance wireless
service with improved reliability and greater capacity while
supporting a large number of diverse users, subscriber units and
applications.”
DIA recently completed installing Meru Network’s AP300 APs and
MC3000 wireless controllers. The AP300 is equipped with two
a/b/g/n radios to simultaneously support the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz
spectrums that provide backward compatibility with legacy
802.11b/g clients as well as prepare the network for the
next-generation 802.11n clients. With Meru Network’s 802.11n
technology, the airport will be able to support the demands of
airport businesses and passengers using a variety of wireless
consumer electronics including personal computers and handheld
devices running data, voice and video applications.
Meru Network’s Innovative Architecture
Meru Network’s unique single channel wireless architecture
allows enterprises to migrate to the next physical standard
without requiring a redesign of the network. Starting with a
single channel and layering the channels on top of it as needed
allows enterprises to easily and cost-effectively add capacity
to the network as the demands increase.
“With the millions of passengers, concessionaires and employees
of the Denver International Airport, the ability to
simultaneously support security and QoS, as well as handle high
capacities and dense user environments are of vital importance,”
said Rachna Ahlawat, vice president, strategic marketing at Meru
Networks. “Meru Networks excels in these challenging
environments. By choosing to go with the 802.11n products, the
airport will now be able to provide the throughput and range
required on a wireless medium to take the technology and the
market to the next level of the all-wireless enterprise.”
